Evelyn Glennie Listens to Sound without Hearing It – Class 9 English

Author: Deborah Cowley

Summary (English)

"Evelyn Glennie Listens to Sound without Hearing It" is an inspiring story about Evelyn Glennie, a world-famous percussionist who overcame deafness through determination and hard work. Evelyn's hearing gradually weakened, and by the age of eleven she was profoundly deaf. Doctors advised her to use hearing aids and study in a school for deaf children.

However, Evelyn refused to give up her dream of becoming a musician. With the help of percussionist Ron Forbes, she learned to feel music through vibrations in different parts of her body. She trained herself to sense sound through her skin, fingers, cheekbones and feet.

Her dedication and hard work helped her gain admission to the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she achieved great success. She became one of the world's most famous multi-percussionists and received many awards and honours.

Evelyn's life teaches us that determination, confidence and hard work can help us overcome even the greatest challenges.

II. Answer each of these questions in a short paragraph (30–40 words).

1. Who helped her to continue with music? What did he do and say?

Answer: Ron Forbes, a percussionist, helped Evelyn continue with music. He trained her to feel music through vibrations rather than hearing it. He told her, “Don't listen through your ears, try to sense it some other way.”

2. Name the various places and causes for which Evelyn performs.

Answer: Evelyn performs in regular concerts around the world. She also gives free concerts in hospitals and prisons. In addition, she conducts classes for young musicians and inspires deaf children.

III. Answer the question in two or three paragraphs (100–150 words).

1. How does Evelyn hear music?

Answer:

Although Evelyn Glennie is profoundly deaf, she experiences music through vibrations. Her teacher Ron Forbes trained her to feel different sounds through various parts of her body. She discovered that high notes could be felt in the upper part of her body, while lower notes could be felt in the lower part.

When Evelyn plays the xylophone, she feels the vibrations through the sticks and fingertips. While playing drums, she senses the sound by leaning against them. She often removes her shoes while performing so that vibrations can pass through her bare feet and legs.

Thus, Evelyn does not hear music with her ears. Instead, she feels and understands it through her entire body, which enables her to perform brilliantly despite her disability.
