Tea from Assam written by Arup Kumar Datta describes the journey taken by two friends to a tea plantation in Assam. Pranjol, a youngster from Assam, is Rajvir's classmate at school in Delhi. Pranjol's father is the manager of a tea-garden in Upper Assam and Pranjol has invited Rajvir to visit his home during the summer vacation. The given extract describes Rajvir experience and captures his exCitement and interest, when he sets his eyes on the rolling green tea plantations for the first time in his life.

Ans. Rajvir’s visit to Dhekiabari, where Pranjol’s father worked as a manager, was a novel experience and he found it extremely fascinating. As they proceeded along the gravel road, with neatly pruned sea of tea bushes spreading over acres of land, he saw groups of tea-workers, wearing plastic aprons and baskets of bamboo sticks on their back, picking newly sprouted tea leaves.
5. Why is Rajvir excited? Why does his friend not share his excitement?
Ans. Rajvir is from Delhi and is excited because he is seeing a tea garden for the first time in his life. Pranjol does not share his excitement because he has been born and brought up on a tea estate and so the scenery is not new to him.
6. Mention two legends associated with tea.
Ans. The first legend associated with tea is about a Chinese emperor who liked to drink water after boiling it. One day a few leaves of the twigs burning under the pot fell into the water and gave it a delicious flavor. They were tea leaves and thus the Chinese emperor discovered this flavoursome beverage.
The second legend associated with tea is an lndian one which says that Bodhidharma, an ancient Buddhist ascetic, in an attemnt to control sleep during meditations, cut off his eyelids. Ten tea plants grew out of these eyelids. The leaves of these plants when put in hot water and drunk, helped to keep sleep away.
